ascension

The plague came down
and created in us, a certain nuance
and a love for subtlety that went far beyond the acquired romance with human suffering
and sadistic,
broken,
psychopathy.
Beginnings made no sense afterwards
but it began,
first with rats then with people and finally in the air itself
and we descended too,
the long flights down staircases made
much longer
and the insides of our heads picked
threadbare
by those imaginary scurrying rodents that attached themselves to our parietal lobes
until our arms were too heavy to lift
and the cerebellum was just
a figment of our broken imaginations.

We thought ourselves angels
and those unlike us,
were there only to torment.
